Within the Turkic family of languages, Kumyk belongs to the West Kipchak subgroup of the larger Kipchak subgroup of the Common Turkic subfamily.
It is spoken by 450 thousand people primarily in Russia’s Dagestan, Chechnya, and North Ossetia.
Kumyk is official in Russia: Dagestan.
