Turkic Lyrics: ASAMAT — Ăшăтсам (Warm Me Up)

A wintry song with a holıday season vibe, must warm you up. Not only do the girls from ASAMATshine here with their talents. This Chuvash also translates well into Turkish and is an apt feature in our Turkic Lyrics project.

This song is about appreciating how much a dearest person can do with just a look in the eye, especially in times when warmth and closeness is needed. It also shows how Chuvash and Turkish are quite close.

Here are some interesting linguistic moments.

  • şeşke is çiçek obviously, but in Chuvash it “tears open”, whereas in Turkish is just customary to say it opens. ăšăt-ısıt- “to warm” is only phonetically different but quite recognizable.
  • ĕmĕtümit “dreams, hope” from Arabic, cuncan from Persian.
  • tuj- “to feel” — duy- “to hear, or sense”. tujăm is “a feeling”, but duyum is “sense perception. Also, awkwardly estranged are tuh+ăş “east” and çık+ış despite being made of cognate components. The word savni for “darling”, or rather “beloved”, has a diminutive affix -şĕm attached to it, which is the same as Turkish -cığım.
  • sukmak “path”, which is probably a loan from another Turkic language (sokmak in Kyrgyz, and Chagatay) is absent in Turkish. ahal’ “in vain” is another word that is missing in Turkish, and it comes from Old Turkic igil.

Not only this song gives a warm feeling, but it takes us to th depth of Turkic languages, which are quite warm to each other within.

See for yourself. What strikes you the most?

Did you know you can watch the videos here before their actual premier in Youtube? How great is that?

Warm Me Up

My soul blooms with emotions
Dreams and intentions in my mind
Darling, look me in the eyes
Warm me up with your smile
Warm me up, warm me up
Warm me up with your smile
Warm me up, warm me up
Warm me up with your smile
When the sun rises in the east
Irresistible is the new day
Darling, when you’re with me
Seems like time is flying so fast
Seems so fast, seems so fast
Seems like time is flying so fast
Seems so fast, seems so fast
Seems like time is flying so fast
Love can lift up hearts
A warm smile brings joy
Darling, when you sit beside me
Tell me how you love me
Tell me how, tell me how
Tell me how you love me
Tell me how, tell me how
Tell me how you love me
You, my darling, you are my destiny
Let’s walk one path together
Darling, when you smile so warmly
I don’t feel like I’m living in vain
Not in vain, not in vain
I don’t feel like I’m living in vain
Not in vain, not in vain
I don’t feel like I’m living in vain
